( CHARACTER INFORMATION )
- ★ NAME: Kaladin Stormblessed
- ★ AGE:  19
- ★ CANON & CANON POINT: The Stormlight Series – at the end of the Words of Radiance where he heads off to save his remaining family.
- ★ CANON INFORMATION:
- ★ PERSONALITY: Kaladin is a complex mix of many different emotions within his personality. There is an undoubtable passion entombed within him that pushes him to go above and beyond for everyone in his life. He puts his heart and soul into every action that he does, even if sometimes he does get a little misguided every now and again.

He is fiercely loyal to those who hold his trust. He wouldn’t hesitate to throw himself in harm’s way in order to protect the people he cares for and even those he doesn’t so long as it’s the right thing to do. This is shown dozens upon dozens of times throughout The Way of Kings and The Words of Radiance.  Kaladin is also very protective of those who resemble his younger brother. He even goes so far as to bring them into his fold and he treats them with a friendly kindness that he doesn’t show to anyone else. Kaladin’s family meant everything to him, especially his younger brother Tien, as Tien was the only one who could ever pull Kaladin out of his deep depression during his youth. The way he becomes protective over those who resemble his younger brother is because of the fact that he failed in protecting Tien and instead watched in horror as he was killed in front of him. His failure to protect Tien is something that continues to haunt him to this day. He attempts on multiple occasions to try and protect others to try and make up for his inability to protect his brother, but on almost all of those multiple occasions, Kaladin is unable to protect those close to him. This created a complex within Kaladin and made him hate himself as he cannot understand why everyone around him always seems to die and why he keepson living instead, despite the odds. These experiences have often left Kaladin in deep bouts of depression as he failed to keep people he cared about alive. His depression, if left unchecked, often increases in severity to the point where he has even contemplated suicide. Since his brother Tien’s death, his spren, Sylphrena (Syl for short), has been the only one in his life who can pull him back from the brink. She has now become his hope, his light in place of his younger brother who he failed to protect. Because of this he has a strong bond with Syl and wouldn’t be able to continue on without her.

Syl is his rock, she is the glue that holds him together and Kaladin wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for her. The bond he has with her is one of respect. He trusts her beyond anything else and often seeks council from Syl when it comes to situations. She has saved his life a number of times through the series, the first being when he was ready to jump to his death when he thought that he’d lost everything (including Syl) only to see her return, and with it his will to live, and secondly when he was punished and hung upside down outside during a Highstorm to be killed. Kaladin sees her as his most valuable friend, and Syl often gives him advice, suggestions, or ideas to help Kaladin come to various decisions. She in return is very protective of Kaladin both in mind, body, and spirit, and she often lays her claim and holds a sort of possessive nature over him, often stating that he is ‘hers’ and that no one else can have him – this is usually in conjunction of other types of spren trying to ‘claim’ him such as deathspren or rotspren while he’s injured.

He has been betrayed over and over again throughout the years, and so many people who he loved and cared for in his life have died around him while he lived. This has created a deep rooted sense of fear and vulnerability inside of him that whispers words of being a failure in the back of his mind. Kaladin tries to keep his demons at bay, but during times of isolation, long drizzling rain, or when those he cares about are killed around him, that fear takes hold of his mind. This is when Kaladin is most susceptible to falling into bouts of depression. The other side of that fear coin is the burning anger that he feels inside - one could say that it swirls within him like a violent storm. He hates what are known as ‘Lighteyes’ in the series (people with light coloured eyes that ranked higher in society than those with darker coloured eyes), as they’ve betrayed his trust/faith in them time and time again. It has been because of the Lighteyes that he has lost so many people that he cared for and loved and he has developed a deep mistrust of Lighteyes due to his treatment from Brightlord Roshone, Brightlord Amaram and Highprince Sadeas. Brightlord Amaram promised to protect Tien (who could not fight), took back his word and placed Tien in a situation where he was slaughtered on the battlefield. Brightlord Roshone, the governor of Kaladin’s hometown of Hearthstone, had it out for his family and made life as difficult as possible for him. Highprince Sadaes, and all the Lighteyes of his warcamp, didn’t value the lives of slaves or any of the darkeyes and threw away their lives as if they meant nothing. There are many other examples that lead to this hatred he feels towards those with light coloured eyes. This hatred is something that he’s been working on over the last few months though, and his severe distrust has slowly been dissolving away thanks to the honest intentions of the Highprince Dalinar and his family (all Lighteyes). I don’t think that Kaladin’s distrust and hatred over the Lighteyes will ever fully disappear, but the work Dalinar’s been doing with Kaladin over the months has started to show him that maybe not all Lighteyes are bad.

Kaladin may often give off the impression that he’s arrogant. This isn’t because he thinks himself above anyone else, but because he is so filled with complete and utter determination to never let another human being beat him down or cage him. He had been deceived and lied to multiple times by Lighteyes, and resents the Lighteyes for treating anyone with dark coloured eyes as if they’re nothing but toys for them to play with. This is why he would never let another person treat him in such a way regardless of their rank. Kaladin no longer fears speaking his mind and has even bluntly told the king of Roshar that he believes him to be a terribly weak king and he should do the right thing by abdicating.

Kaladin is a man who acts with honour even when he’s given up on everything else in his life. He lives his life following the Alethi Codes of War: Readiness is the first code. Kaladin shows this when he becomes the bridge leader of bridge four. He insisted that all of the slaves under his command were to wear vests when they were on bridge duty, whereas before not even half of the bridge crew would wear vests or even sandals. He did this so then those in his command would be as prepared as they could be for the coming battle and run for the plateau. This was one of many examples where he showed that he, and thus the men working beneath him, were prepared for battle. The second code, inspiration, was shown when Kaladin tried inspiring the slaves in bridge four who had given up on life. He did this by showing them that they could be more than what they’d become by carrying large planks of wood in a hope to inspire them to join him. The third code is restraint. Kaladin showed restraint many times throughout the book. One such example was when, as a slave, he allowed himself to be beaten severely by soldiers to avoid starting any further trouble even if he knew that he could best those soldiers in a fight. There are times where he sometimes lets the moment get away from him, such as challenging a Brightlord to a challenge that’s far above his station to do so, but when it comes to protecting his men Kaladin shows the utmost restraint. Kaladin is a natural born leader and shows the fourth code, leadership, countless times through both books. Bridge runs in the series was, perhaps, one of the most dangerous assignments in the war. Those who ran at the front of the bridge were guaranteed to be killed in the initial run to the plateau, which was why Kaladin insisted on running at the front of the bridge during every last bridge run so that he could try and protect as many of his men as possible. This display of self-sacrificing then gained the loyalty of the other bridge members which then had them swearing their lives to fight alongside Kaladin when they were finally freed as slaves. The final code is honour. This code is what Kaladin lives and breathes, and throughout both books he not only risks his life on countless occasions to save people, even those he hates, but he also spends his own resources to take care of anyone who is injured whether it be the king, a highprince, soldier, or even a lowly slave or beggar on the street. He has done this even when there are battles still raging all around him, as saving the life of both those under and not under his protection is just as important to him as doing all he can to protect those people in the first place.

- ★ COURT ALLIANCE: Kaladin by default would be a character that should go over to Seelie. The values and codes he follows would make him a perfect candidate. However, while I know he would fit in wonderfully there, I know that it wouldn’t allow for him to grow properly as a character. He would undoubtedly begin to build a negative outlook on their lavish lifestyle. He hates the way that ‘upper-class’ focus so much on drinking and partying and Kaladin finds it completely unnecessary – especially while in a war situation. Kaladin also would not willingly leave his homeworld either. He sees himself as his world’s protector and is fiercely protective of the people there against the evils of his world. This would be why he’d never accept the invitation to go and wouldn’t hesitate in letting the shard die inside of him. To Kaladin, his people and world needed him, and he would never willingly abandon them. This is why I would prefer it if he was taken to the Unseelie side. The codes they follow may not align with his own, but it is an environment that he knows and would also test him. He’s experienced so much in the last 19 years of his life, and he feels more comfortable being in the seedier parts of a location than rubbing shoulders with the upper class (so to speak). I also believe that being forced to go to the Unseelie side would also help to inspire Kaladin to try and find a different route to take to try and not only get himself home, but to unify both opposing sides. Knowing that he was kidnapped to go to the Unseelie side, he’d also initially believe that those on the Seelie side were also kidnapped and he would work hard to try and rescue anyone he could.

- ★ ABILITIES:

Surgeon – Kaladin is a very skilled surgeon. His father was the town’s surgeon as he was growing up and taught his son everything he knew about how to heal people from various degrees of injuries, ranging from common colds all the way up to grievous bodily harm. In his own world he knew every plant, herb, and practice there was in order to help save a person’s life. Kaladin can also assess wounds perfectly, knows when amputation is needed (and how to do it), and knows when he can’t save a patient.

Spear skills – The first time Kaladin picked up a spear he was already a natural to it. He has an uncanny affinity with the weapon despite never having trained with one during his youth (given that he had trained only to be a surgeon). His skills were that good that his name spread quickly when it came to his skills and he was soon given the nickname of ‘Stormblessed’ by the other soldiers in the army. Since then he has become a master when it comes to fighting with a spear. Kaladin has even managed to defeat full shardbearers (people wearing shardplates and wielding shardblades - described below) using nothing more than a spear and a knife before he knew he had any special powers.

Physical abilities – He is in peak physical condition. This isn’t just because of his time in the army. All of that training to become a spearman would have already given him great dexterity and strength, but his time carrying massive bridges on his shoulders also helped to build up his muscle mass.

Surgebinder abilities – Kaladin is a surgebinder, in particular he is part of the windrunners. This gives him access to a number of abilities that help aid him in battle. While he’s using his abilities, all of Kaladin’s physical attributes are enhanced:

Speed – While infused with Stormlight, Kaladin’s speed is greatly increased. He can control how fast he goes by adjusting how much Stormlight he holds in his body. The less Stormlight he’s absorbed, the slower he is. At his peak with Stormlight he is capable of covering long distances in a matter of seconds.

Strength – His strength is also greatly increased while infused. While he’s absorbed Stormlight, he is capable of holding his own and fighting against people who wear shardplates and wield shardblades (Shardplates increase a wear’s physical attributes to inhuman levels).

Stamina – Kaladin’s stamina is greatly increased. So long as he’s infused with Stormlight he will never tire and actually has an urge to keep moving. Once the Stormlight fades he loses almost all of his stamina and energy and is often left exhausted.

Healing – His body is capable of healing wounds while he’s infused with Stormlight. Wounds sustained either before or during the absorption are healed within seconds. It has been noted in the book that he can heal minor scrapes all the way through to broken bones and dead limbs. The more severe the injury the more Stormlight it uses. Kaladin is also able to heal completely from Shardblade injuries (attack effects detailed below in weapon section) provided that the strike doesn’t first kill him. The healing ability has also been shown to be able to regrow limbs as well.

Breath – Kaladin is able to hold his breath for as long as he has Stormlight in his body. Within the book, he’s been known to have no need for breathing for well over twenty minutes while he was using Stormlight. If he is hit or surprised he would subconsciously let out a breath – an action that would release some of the Stormlight trapped within his body.

Other Surgebinder abilities:

The Surge of Pressure and Vacuum (Full Lashings) – Kaladin is capable of performing Full Lashings. What this means is that he can use the Stormlight inside of his body to bind one object to another. The bond is said to be so strong that, until the Stormlight runs out, the only way to ‘break’ the bond between those two objects is to cut around the area that’s bound. The length of the Full Lashing depends on how much Stormlight Kaladin uses. Minimal Stormlight would hold a Full Lashing for approximately thirty seconds. Large amounts of Stormlight used would hold the objects together for a number of minutes. This ability has been used in many ways. One such way is binding stones to a wall to create a ladder to climb. Another use is by binding people/bodies/limbs to floors, ceilings, or walls. Only one object needs to be infused with Stormlight before being pressed to another object or surface.

The Surge of Gravity – there are two types of surges when it comes to gravity. The basic concept of this ability is that the Surgebinder is able to change the direction of the gravitational pull of an object along with the magnitude of it if multiple Lashes are placed.

Basic Lashings are used to create gravitational pulls in a direction of the user’s choice. They are able to temporarily alter the strength and vector of the gravitational pull of an object of their choosing. Users are capable of using multiple Basic Lashings on a single object in order to accelerate the desired direction they want an object to be pulled. Capable users are also able to create both half lashings, where they can make an object weightless (to give the ability to float), or quarter lashings where it cuts an object’s weight in half. The best way to describe what a Basic Lashing is would be to say that a person’s sense of what’s up and down changes depending on what direction the lashing takes place. If Kaladin lashed himself to a ceiling, then to him everything on the floor would be upside down as it is the new ceiling to him whereas the ceiling would now be the floor to him. Basic Lashings can also be used to give Kaladin (or anyone he lashes) the ability to fly. As he stated in the book: the skies and the wind belonged to him as he could travel through it with both speed and ease.

Reverse Lashings are the second type of Gravity Surges. Unlike the Basic Lashings, Reverse Lashings give an object a gravitational pull instead of taking it away. This can cause a target to become a new gravitational pull to the point where other objects would be drawn to it like a magnet. This type of Lashing requires the least amount of Stormlight but it is also one of the more difficult abilities to use given that it requires more skill to be able to move items that are on the ground towards the targeted area (such as men or furniture towards a single location). Objects that are already in flight or in the air are much easier to pull towards the Lashing point. An example of this ability is when Kaladin Reverse Lashes his shield and the bridge following just behind to pull all of the incoming arrows to those two objects instead of himself or the men carrying the bridge behind him.

One last ability that he has is that those who both spend large amounts of time (as in months) with him, and also hold the same ideals of honour as Kaladin, also begin to be able to draw in Stormlight and gain access to the above abilities. Stormlight, however, is held only within gemstones and currency from Kaladin’s world. He would only have the bag full of gems on him that he’ll be able to draw his power in. If anybody in the game gets to that point in their CR with Kaladin, then only those who are near Kaladin, or are given any of his spheres, would be able to gain access to this ability.

Kaladin’s spheres only hold a limited amount of energy in it. The smaller chips hold the least amount (diamond the weaker material out of the three Kaladin has on him) – one holds enough to repair a minor injury or to Full Lash 3 objects, marks hold a decent amount of energy – enough to heal moderate injuries such as multiple gashes or one large wound or Full Lash up to ten objects, while broams hold a large amount of it – enough to heal broken bones or multiple large injuries or up to twenty objects. To revive a dead or lost limb, it would take all of his spheres in order to revive or regrow that area. The spheres in general, once the energy’s been used and it’s turned dull, would slowly regenerate energy over a period of time unless there’s a storm flowing through the area.

Without a storm it would go as followed:
Chips would require half a day to regenerate energy.
Marks would require one full day to regenerate energy.
Broams would require three full days to regenerate energy.

If there is a moderate to severe storm, the all sphere energies would regenerate within minutes regardless of size/quality.

Energy-filled spheres can also be used to produce light much like how a lantern or torch does.

Honourblade abilities – Honourblades are different than your regular shardblade, which is different once again to a regular sword. His honourblade is capable of transforming into whatever weapon he needs at the time he needs it where a shardblade is only capable of having one form. During his battle against the White Assassin, Kaladin’s honourblade transformed into a spear, a warhammer, a small knife, a sword, and a shield. Unlike shardblades, which take ten heartbeats to summon, honourblades can be called instantly.Honourblades, and shardblades, are extremely dangerous weapons to fight against. They are massive weapons (often up to 5 feet or so in length) that weigh far less than a standard sword size. That isn’t what makes them dangerous though. What makes them dangerous is their ability to cut through inanimate matter like a hot knife through butter. They do not cut living flesh, the blade fuzzes through it unharmed without killing or spilling a drop of blood. What makes honourblades and shardblades extremely dangerous to the living is that the weapons themselves are capable of severing the souls of the living. Any part of the body it cuts through instantly turns grey and dies. If the blade touches the spine of a target, they die instantly and the only sign of the method of their death is the eyes. Those who die via this type of blade have their eyes burn out as their souls are severed from their body. If it cuts through the core of a limb (such as the blade cutting through to the middle of an opponent’s arm, that limb will die and be rendered permanently limp, numb, and useless. If a vital organ is struck by a honourblade/shardblade then that too will suffer the same fate as a limb. Once the flesh is dead (whether it be a limb or organ), then it can be effortlessly cut through like any other inanimate matter. Other parts of the body, such as hair, fingernails, shells, can also be cut without the entire body going dead because those parts of the body aren’t living.

Wielding this type of blade takes a great deal of skill. This is because there are never feelings of resistance when landing a blow because the blade passes through both living and non-living matter as though it’s just being swiped through the air. Skill is needed to understand and control each swing in order to continue with momentum and keep the blade moving. Honourblades and shardblades can only be blocked by three things: another shardblade, by shardplate, or by half-shard shields. Nothing else is known to block one of these blades.

Syl – she has no real power of her own. The only ‘power’ she has is that she can tell when someone is lying and she can pick up small objects. Beyond that she transforms into Kaladin’s Shardblade, which is a massive weapon coloured a vivid blue and has swirling patterns along its length.

- ★ INVENTORY: Honourblade,  spheres on hand: 20x diamond chips, 14x diamond marks, 11x diamond broams, 4x garnet marks, and 1x ruby broam. He also has a few medical supplies on him – bandages, and some bottled knobweed sap (antiseptic) that prevents and counters infection

Additional notes:

- Kaladin is a very tall character. He's said to be a little shorter than another character, Rock, who was seven feet in height. I've put him down as being approximately 6'9".

- He used to have brown eyes until recently in the book. Since becoming a Knight Radiant, Kaladin's eyes have since turned a pale crystal blue colour instead. This is something he sometimes forgets.

- Syl is almost constantly with Kaladin, or not far from him. She is similar to a lie detector. While she doesn't know what the truth is, she does know that what is being said is untruthful and will let Kaladin know.

- Kaladin is actually illiterate. In Alethi society, only the women read. Men, at most, can read a handful of glyphs, but they are unable to read or write as that is of the feminine arts and are frowned on if males are capable of such. This means that unless it's a voice or video post, Kaladin will not (until someone teaches him) respond to any text network posts.

- He will also become embarrassed (at least in the beginning) whenever he sees that a woman has left her hands 'naked'. In his canon, women (except for the whores) cover up their left hand (their safehand). I can see that eventually he won't react as badly at seeing them, but I feel that it will always make him uncomfortable in one way or another throughout the game.
